EX-CHICAGO ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Martin Havlat

One of the stars of the Blackhawks' amazing run to the Western Conference Finals last season has moved on to greener pastures. Forward Martin Havlat signed a six-year deal with Minnesota on the same day the Blackhawks made the biggest splash in the NHL free agent market by signing Detroit forward Marian Hossa to a blockbuster 12-year, $62.8 million deal to replace Havlat. You'd think after earning the love of a city and getting $5 million per year from the Wild would make you a humble, happy man. But Havlat, the leading scorer last season despite the attention garnered by Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, decided to go the other way. Check out this post to his Twitter account: "Excited to be in Minny where I was welcomed and appreciated by management," Havlat wrote. "The real story about what happened in Chicago [will] come out." Wow. After signing a three-year deal for $18 million after forcing a trade to the Hawks from Ottawa, Havlat played only 91 games in his first two seasons thanks to a shoulder injury. And he had a great season last year, no doubt. Though Hossa is two years older than Havlat, and has played for three teams in two years, he has averaged over 70 points per season in his career and is an iron man, rarely missing time with injuries. To receive a six-year deal for $30 million and then rip the team that ultimately got you that deal is in extremely bad form, Marty. You could have been loved in Chicago. Now, I can't wait until your first trip back to the United Center. Try one of your patented high-sticking incidents that night. I dare you.
